Welfare losses in commodity storage games
نویسنده
چکیده
We develop a game theoretic model of a shared commodity storage facility whose injection/ejection and space resources have been allocated to multiple selfish firms. We assume a setting where each firms injectability and deliverability depend on overall inventory within the store. This is most common in settings that involve the storage of liquids or gases such as natural gas or oil. We analyze the strategic interaction that occurs in a pre-commitment game where firms commit to inject until a certain time and subsequently withdraw the commodity until it is exhausted. We contrast equilibrium and welfare maximizing outcomes whilst casting our analysis in terms of a natural gas storage facility. We also study the effects of incorporating a “use-it-or-lose-it” policy on overall welfare. Our results indicate that significant inefficiencies can occur in both settings.

متن کاملWhen Energy Storage Reduces Social Welfare
This paper examines the potential welfare effects of storage under different market structures. This includes combinations of perfectly competitive and strategic generation and storage sectors, and standalone and generator-owned storage. We demonstrate that if the generation sector is perfectly competitive and does not own storage, then storage cannot be welfare-diminishing. Otherwise, generato...
متن کاملOptimal Inventory-Management-Policy for Commodity Storage-Assets
Commodity storage-assets can be either physical storage-facilities, or contracts guaranteeing their use. Merchants employ them to support their commodity-trading activities in wholesale markets, which are characterized by notoriously volatile prices. Managing a storage asset requires determining an inventory-management policy, which, given a realization of the commodity price, consists of choos...
متن کاملCooperation and distributive conflict
If either property rights or institutions are weak, agents who create wealth by cooperating will later have an incentive to fight over the distribution of it. In this paper we investigate theoretically and experimentally the circumstances under which welfare losses from investment in distributional contests destroy welfare gains from voluntary cooperation. We find that in situations, where the ...
متن کاملNetwork Cost Allocation Games on Growing Electricity Grids
This paper examines major problems with commonly proposed approaches to network cost allocation games, with a focus on cooperative game theory and its limitations. Such games arise in many contexts, such as determining connection fees for growing electricity networks, micro-grids, fiber-optic cable networks, or even in setting up new municipal water and sewage systems. We consider several chall...
